Understanding The Value Of Inbound Linking

Here's a question that came up from a recent subscriber & SEO company. Does it matter where you get an inbound link for your website? For example, if I am in the epoxy paint industry and I get a link from a directory that doesn't have any traffic. My link is on a page with 200 other listing.

Is this a good link? Compared to a link that is from a well established directory like DMOZ.  Your link is placed in the relevant catagory, as in this case in the home improvement. The link is pointing back to a website that specifically states a keyword phrase and not just the name of your online business.

Without going into details from this straight forward scenario, the back link from DMOZ is more beneficial than the first link. Due to these important attributes from the website linking to you, and that is:
  • Theme = relevant catagory

  • Trust = DMOZ highly trusted directory on the web

  • Targeted Keywords = Google factors in targeted keywords for rankings
There are other things to consider such as the prominences, proximity, and keyword density of the targeted page.  Basics is get your inbound links from an established website and preferably themed to your product and service.
